What is globalization? / CHOI JAE MIN

 1) Summary

Globalization is both very general and very specific. The concept of globalization includes a wide variety of topics, and the explanation for them can be quite clear. Nevertheless, the concept of globalization is essentially a controversial one. There have been many books and articles on globalization so far, but that is the author's own definition. Globalization also exists in the context of civilization, so many scholars explain globalization in a pluralistic way.

Among them, Bellho describes globalization as an object, a perspective horizon, and says that overall, the world takes on a different aspect among scholars and observers about the globalization process.  So many scholars define globalization according to their background, which makes it hard to define it as a single thing.

Many globalization-related references usually say that globalization has three dimensions: politics and economic culture. In this paper, one of the examples of globalization in the cultural aspect is mcDonaldization, which is also linked to the economic aspect. It can also be interpreted that the cultural and economic aspects have some kind of connection in globalization.

Regarding the format of globalization, Emmanuel Wallerstein noted that the world is becoming a system similar to just one place. He also mentioned the need to discuss how to embrace globalization, saying that today's society is made up of the expansion of capitalism. However, there was a scholar who presented a slightly different view that globalization was not a big interpretation of the state or the earth, but also had a big impact on the individual, whose name was Beck Gernsheim. He thought the world would eventually rely on personal parts, and interpreted the perspective of globalisation as an individual. In conclusion, this shows that a lot of scholars interpret globalization differently from a slightly different perspective

After all, what characterizes globalization is that globalization connectivity and globalization consciousness increase, and globalization has a certain form. Here, it is said that the UN organization is one of the specific forms of globalization. Globalization consists of four aspects of human life: culture, society, politics and economy, and these four aspects interact with each other and are closely related to the modern world.

And it is also important not to try to shape globalization. It is most important to recognize globalization from a conceptual perspective, not from a materialistic perspective. When asked what globalization is, it is impossible to answer clearly. Rather than focusing on the description of globalization, consideration and consideration of spatial and temporal changes are the goals of seeing the world.

There is also an important point: globalization should not be used as a word to express a kind of fad word or simple problem. It suggests that we should pay a lot of attention in this regard.

2) Interesting point

The most impressive part of my reading of this document was the ambiguity and diversity of the concept of globalization.

The reason I took this class was because I thought that this COVID-19 situation could lead to anti-globalization, so I wondered how much globalization in the sociological sense would have in the present society. However, the globalization described in the document was not a one-dimensional concept that I thought was simple and uniform.

I was most impressed with the process of finding out what globalization is, because it has these different meanings, and it can be very meaningful depending on the person who deals with and interprets the concepts.

So, I could feel that the globalization that I've interpreted so far can also have a special meaning, even from a different perspective.

And it's a little vague to say that this was impressive, but there was something to do with the ambiguity that I mentioned earlier.
Because the concept of globalization is so comprehensive and vast, the writing that explains it itself felt very difficult and difficult. So it took me some time to understand that concept and to accept it from my perspective. I think others, including myself, will agree with this idea.

Also, there are some new knowledge that cultural factors have influenced globalization a lot. There was also an extra blog topic last time, and it was fun to check it out in the paper, and I was impressed by the mention that the franchises I usually use, such as McDonald's and KFC, are related to globalization.

3) Discussion

I'll share with you what I was curious about and wanted to know.

With people all over the world suffering from COVID-19 now, some people have begun to offer interesting opinions. It's about anti-globalization. If the current state of national, social, and cultural closures continues, it will certainly hamper future globalization.

What do you think about this? I'd like to discuss the future prospects of globalization based on your personal perspective.

To tell you about my idea in advance, I agree with the above-mentioned opinion.
This situation will remain for quite a long time, and I think that anti-globalization factors such as domestic economy and domestic culture will become important. One of the most representative examples is the "Donghak ant movement" in the Korean stock market, in which domestic investors worked very hard to revive the domestic market as all foreign investors were excluded from the Korean stock market.

As such, I have a slightly negative view of the future prospects of globalization.

Comments

  1. I think globalization has facilitated covid-19 infection. Globalization has made exchanges between countries more active, and viruses have also been actively transmitted.
But I also think that globalization is the way to solve the covid-19 infection.

I think that, if not necessarily economically, exchange of Corona 19 information between countries should be essential, and cooperation on vaccine research between countries will play a major role in resolving the current situation.

So I think globalization positively from a future perspective.
