[Reading 4] What is the relation between economics and globalization? /PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

Summary  The economy and globalization are closely related. Globalization has allowed all countries in the global community to connect and share with each other. Some have gone in a more advanced direction by sharing various fields such as economy, culture, and society, but some have worsened the situation. The era of economic independence as an individual has come to an end, with the world's economy flowing into neo-liberalism. In the case of Korea, exports account for most of its economic income, which will inevitably depend on negotiations and trade with other countries and the economic situation of the country. As a result, globalization has been closely linked to the economy and has caused more economic problems such as inequality and poverty than positive directions. Interesting point  What's interesting about learning globalization is that globalization affects all areas of each other. I don't think we can ignore the impact of globalization, whether it's in a goo...

Globalization some videos for discuss, "The Spirit Level," Richard Wilkinson/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

What are the main arguments of the video? What surprised you? Do you think the speaker is right? The main argument in Richard Wilkinson's lecture is that inequality is not created simply by economic differences, but by various factors that create inequality, and that inequality affects society in some way. What surprised me about this video was that it first organized and visualized invisible conditions into data. And before watching the video, I was aware that a country with a large economic inequality is a country with a poor economy. However, it was surprising that the existing perception of rich or poor countries was broken through the income data and life expectancy data of each country.  Since then, I have come to sympathize with the result that the middle part of society is not dependent on national income, economic growth, and the magnitude of differences between us, including relative income, social status, and social status within society. Having a concept like thi...

in cultural terms, is our culture better or worse then centuries ago?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

It seems to be an area where it is difficult to clearly divide culture into two areas, 'good' and 'bad'. And since culture is different for each country, I want to set it up as Korea where I live and talk about the above questions. Although we haven't experienced all of Korea's culture directly in the past hundreds of years, I think that the current Korean culture is the result of accumulating past cultures.  I would like to talk about how Korean culture is better than it was centuries ago. Korea is becoming more vocal than Korea in the past. There are many cultures of voices, but I want to talk about the part that was taboo in Korea in the past. For example, the perception of sex is moving in a positive direction than centuries ago. In the past, women in Korea were perceived as supporting men and serving families rather than being independent and independent. Based on this perception, the idea of male preference has continued since the Joseon Dynasty, but it i...

Is globalization good or bad? What do you think?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

I think it's hard to choose either 'globalization is good or bad' This is because any phenomenon is found both positive and negative. It is important to create more positive aspects of globalization, and on the contrary, I think it is important for the future of the global village where we will live together to reduce the negative aspects.  If you think about the positive side of globalization along with the development of technology, I think the most positive side is not just looking at the well of the country where I live, but meeting new cultures and people who are different from me, and meeting these experiences, so that I can have a broader perspective rather than a conventional one. Now is the time when the whole world is made into a society without borders, and living together in this world requires a broad perspective and a spirit of tolerance and acceptance to recognize and accept others, and it is more important than ever.  On the contrary, it is true that ther...

Poverty in Korea is affecting mostly the elderly, Why do you think this is the case?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

I looked up the latest statistics on the elderly poverty rate. According to the "2020 Statistics on the Elderly" released by the National Statistical Office, the relative poverty rate among people aged 66 and older was 43.4 percent. It can be seen that nearly half of the elderly are in relative poverty. This phenomenon proves that poverty in Korea is like poverty in the elderly.  In particular, the reason why the poverty rate of the elderly is high in Korea depends on the preparation for retirement. In fact, in Korean families, parents are raising their children with all financial responsibilities. The reality of Korea is that children are 20 years old and adults in Korea, but economic independence is not possible. They are struggling with high college tuition, money for job seekers before they get a job, and debt that they have to pay back even if they work. Even if you get married, you should pay dearly for basic medicine, ceremonies, and states in Korea. This is why there...

Weber’s theory of charismatic leaders, Do you think this could happen?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

I think it can happen. The recent Corona-19 has brought too much global economic blow. Numerous unemployed people and job markets have been frozen, and economic difficulties have led to increased depression and associated suicide rates. I think that the former modern society of Corona was no longer able to make social movements due to neo-liberalism, and that the polarization of society became more apparent because of Corona-19.  While the above questions cannot be said to be true, the recent Gwanghwamun rally and face-to-face worship at a large church in South Korea in August led to a large number of Corona confirmed throughout the region. After numerous confirmed cases, I would like to focus on their behavior and talk about the theory of charismatic leaders. Social distance, the minister of the Church situation in love with inciting people to believe in warships in the doctrine of them to Gwanghwamun this does not fit with the situation now.The ongoing jipoeeul. If you look...

Is there ranking in men vs. women? Is there ranking in Korean vs foreigner?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

First, I will tell you the ranking between Koreans and foreigners. The perception of foreigners in Korea depends on which country they are from. Especially, foreigners from advanced countries such as the U.S. and Europe are very favorable. This perception has been seen in Korea for a long time and can be found through observational entertainment. As a typical example, when a foreigner from an advanced country asks for directions in English, he or she speaks English and is willing to give help even if he or she is not good at English. However, the perception of foreigners from countries with economic development, not developed countries, is quite the opposite. In particular, the perception of foreigners from countries in Southeast Asia and Africa is distasteful and uncomfortable. They have been working as foreign workers in Korea for the past few years, and whenever the country's economic situation is not good, people have argued that foreign workers have created our jobs, which ha...

Status markers include Income/wealth but also Age/Race /Sex /Education/Occupation /Residence. Which are more important?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

I totally agree that wealth is not everything. Today, society is more complex and diverse. Social status does not simply include wealth, but includes various conditions, among which I think education is important. There are many reasons, and I think race, gender, age, etc. are parts that cannot be changed by my will. Of course, you can change your last name and nationality. But what I want to talk about is that I can't set it in the direction I want from the start. Most of the time, it is first set by their parents and their country.  But education is different from what we talked about earlier. It may vary from country to country, but in the case of Korean society, high school education is essential. Through this common sense of compulsory education, one can learn new things and develop one's ability. This ability makes you capable of finding, understanding, accepting, and applying information to yourself. So I think that my job and future life change depending on how I get ...

In many places, including Korea, there is a strong relationship between education and social class. Why?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

The question that the higher the educational background, the higher the income, the more it is, seems to be a matter that Korean society naturally admits.  Education is one of the sensitive and important parts of Korea. What shows this is how sensitive Korean society is to high school seniors, such as avoiding the time when they take the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) so that their daily lives in Korea do not make any noise in flight. So, depending on which university you graduated from, you evaluate a person's value and then evaluate the company you apply for later life.  This assessment is that perceptions are so different depending on what job you do. For example, professional workers such as doctors, lawyers, prosecutors, teachers, and civil servants take a lot of effort and time to get this job, and once they have it, they can earn money stably, so they have no worries about the future. On the contrary, it does not cost a lot of effort, time and money, such ...

The fight between proponents and opponents of taxation is very visible in many countries, including the USA. Is such fight visible in your country?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

This kind of fight is also taking place in Korea.  In particular, Gangnam-gu in Seoul and Seocho-gu in Seoul are the most affluent areas in Korea.  The number of habitual defaulters disclosed by the National Tax Service is about 39,000, indicating that they can be easily seen around us.  The ostensible reason why they do not pay taxes is that their business is ruined and they have no assets, but the area where they actually live shows that they live in an area that cannot be called moneyless.   In South Korea, inheritance and gift taxes are the least taxable part of the country.  Frankly speaking, inheritance tax is a property received from parents, and if they received enough property to pay taxes, they do not even pay taxes on it, but the direction and method of dealing with it seems weaker than in other countries. In this regard, it has become a reality that Korea has no choice but to be perceived as a country easy to live in if it has a lot of money...

If the current rich countries are aging, and their population will decrease, how can it affect the world society in few decades?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

In Korea, the number of babies a couple has now had is less than one. Not only the birth rate but also the marriage rate is decreasing. In the next few decades, Korea's age group believes that older people over 60 will account for half of the population. In fact, in the case of Japan next door, the problem of the elderly is prominent as a super-aged society. I believe that Korea will become like Japan in the future.  If you look at the countries that lead to this super-aged society, they are rich countries, as you can see from the question. On the contrary, poor countries, such as Southeast Asia and the African continent, show that the number of children and young people is much higher than that of the elderly. In Korea, the elderly who run farming in rural areas lack labor because of the large population of cities. The insufficient labor force is filled by the poor countries mentioned above, such as Southeast Asians, who come in and fill it with the insufficient farmin...

Could globalization collapse again?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

CDC Threat Report: ‘We Will Soon Be in a Post-Antibiotic Era’ (2013) After reading , I came to think about what globalization will be like in the future.  Even now, the Corona-19 is causing countless countries around the world to suffer, and the number of confirmed people seems to be growing out of control. This 2020 was hit economically by the Corona-19 and there were limitations in daily life, such as not being able to go abroad freely.   Even when I read the above report, it seems that it is no longer a war between nations, but a war against infectious diseases. In addition to Corona-19, there will be numerous other infectious diseases, which are in some ways associated with the survival laws of these diseases, and are believed to be a struggle for their survival in the future of the Earth where humans live.   With the advent of various variables in the future, the society we live in will experience other chaos, which could cause globalization to...

Why Koreans and Poles value the environment less than Americans, Australian, Chinese or Japanese?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

As a Korean living in Korea, I thought about whether the environment is less important. The first is that there are fewer environmental problems than in other countries. Compared to the territory of the United States, China and Japan, Korea has a narrow territory. Therefore, environmental problems do not manifest themselves. For example, China's air pollution, such as yellow dust and fine dust, is not clearly seen in Korea, so the seriousness of the problem is not felt. Secondly, it is necessary to recognize the characteristics of Korean society as the reason why economic growth and job creation are more important than environmental issues. Currently, Korean society is uncertain about the future and is in endless competition. The younger generation, in particular, is giving up many aspects such as entering universities, getting a job, and getting married. So this generation is called the N 포 generation. From this point of view, Korean society has a large economic presence, and ...

What other local adaptations of global culture can we think of?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

Among Korean foods, various foods are going abroad. For example, the ramen brand Shin Ramyun has made inroads into various countries, including China, Europe, and the United States. Shin Ramyun, which expresses the spicy taste of Koreans, has captivated the taste of foreigners while retaining its original spicy taste. This is a case of success by creating discrimination against other ramens by maintaining the original taste rather than changing it to the taste of locals. In contrast, there is Paris Baguette, famous for its Korean bakery strategy. Paris Baguette has also made inroads into various countries, including Europe and the United States, and photos of Paris Baguette's bread in Paris, France, have become a hot topic on SNS. The reason is that it actually looked more delicious than the bread of Korean Paris Baguette, could see more kinds, and the price was also cheaper. This shows that Paris, France, has adapted to local culture with its localization strategy, which is fam...

How Korean is Samsung? Let's guess. What % of Samsung a) revenue b) shareholders and c) employees are domestic (Korean)?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)

  A) revenue Among Samsung's revenue, Korea had the lowest ratio of less than 25 percent, followed by Europe, the United States, and Asia. From this, we can see that Samsung's revenue is making money by exporting products to other countries.   B) shareholders Domestic shareholders account for 50 to 75 percent of Samsung's shareholders, followed by the United States, Europe and the rest of the world. This shows that Samsung's shareholders are symbiotic in view of the fact that Koreans have the largest share of Samsung's shareholders and that there are many companies related to Samsung.   C) employees Finally, Samsung's employees are almost 50% in Asia and 25 to 50% in Korea. Through this, we can see that the factory that produces Samsung products is located in the Asian country, which means that many of the employees in Samsung factories have Asian nationality. The next largest number of Korean employees is Samsung, which is the second largest number of K...

How could a fusion culture look in 100 years?/Park HyeMin

When I think about the future of 100 years, I think it's a 180-degree change from what it is now. Among many fields, culture is likely to survive in various forms, with some cultures being mixed up, some disappearing, and others being highlighted. In terms of the theory of cultural relativity, if some cultures are understood differently from each other, there is something that should no longer exist. I would like to talk about the high possibility that in 100 years, culture will simply be a national tradition, so that the persecution will disappear because it cannot respect each person's human rights and will play a proper role as a global culture.

Which country is more culturally globalized : Korea, China or Japan/ Park HyeMin

It is not easy for Koreans to answer this question because i don't know all of Korean culture and i don't know all of the cultures of China and Japan, but I would answer it with my own experience.  Considering the case of China, which has the largest population among the three countries, one cannot help but talk about the recent Disney release, Mulan. When we think about China, which is confused by the current political situation, the release of the movie Mulan reminds us of Chinese thought again. In this context, Chinese thought is the best and most thought of the Han people, the fundamental Chinese people. That's why their ideas are revealed in their culture. Although we can see China's cultural growth in recent years, their ideas are also noticeable. So, I think that their ideas are the best, which is the opposite of globalization.  And in the case of Japanese culture, I think Japanese culture is very diverse. Sometimes I think it's unique, so I don't know i...

Out of the three dimensions of globalization, which is the most important, and why?/ Park HyeMin

I think the cultural dimension is the most important of the three dimensions. Now the world is free to travel around the world, with no borders, time, and space restrictions on each country. Also, as people are able to access various cultures due to the development of the Internet, people are communicating and talking to each other through culture.  For example, I would like to talk about BTS, which recently topped the Billboard chart. As a global influence, BTS not only posted their own songs but also videos of overcoming the Corona-19, showing a message for fans and people around the world to overcome together. Considering this, I think the power of culture is the most important because I think it can encompass the whole world.
