[Reading 2] The relationship between globalization and culture

Image
[Summary] Globalization is a multidimensional process that generally takes place simultaneously in a wide range of areas, including economy, politics, technology, media and communication technology, environmental climate, and culture.  Globalization is a complex, accelerated, and integrated global connection process.  It is also a network of developing and changing interconnection and interdependence that characterize the world's material, social, economic, and cultural lives.  Now globalization exists everywhere around our lives and crosses international boundaries.  Globalization is increasing connectivity between countries, which is increasingly effecting our way of life. In here  Connectivity is the use of media communication technology.  Accidents in other countries can be easily accessed through the Internet.  It also increases anxiety about terrorism, environmental problems, and diseases even though it didn't happen in their own country.  H...

[Reading 3] what is relation between politics and globalization?

[summary] In this reading, I could learn about political globalization in various dimensions.  Here, the reading revolves around the space and borders of globalization. In political globalization, globalization refers to the organization of multi-dimensional and interconnected spaces across borders.  Political globalization emphasizes the decline of ethnic states and the development of transnational networks under the influence of global power.  As many countries were connected and re-territorialized, the process of  Decentralization  took place. The ethnicity among people within one border has been weakened.  It opened up new possibilities for someone, but also brought about the loss of autonomy and division of the world community.  Political globalization can be understood in three dimensions: world geopolitics, world normative culture, and pluralistic networks.  One of the most common forms of political globalization is the spread of demo...

Image
[Summary] This reading4 was able to learn more about transnational companies in various ways by writing about as globalization progresses. As globalization progresses. the economic part is clearly affected by globalization. Transnational corporations occupy an important position in the global economy. The transnational corporations was originated from the 15th century in Europe which is charted trading companies with trade and exchange at world scale. and the first TNC to manufacture and produce outside their original country came into being in the late 19th century. [Blog project assignment 2] Hofstede's cultural dimension theory

Image
I'd like to compare these four countries by Hofstede's cultural dimension theory. I tried to choose both Eastern and Western countries because they're a good variable that can be compared in many ways. The first dimension is power distance. On average, Eastern countries scored higher on power distance. I guess as the East follows Confucian ideas, courtesy and hierarcy are important. on the other hand, Western maintain a relatively comfortable atmosphere regardless of age or power. we can see that china is the most dependent on power among the Eastern countries. Second dimension is individualism. as we can expect, the Western has a greater tendency to individualism than the Eastern. In the East, family culture is very important. Not long ago, most of the Eastern houses were lived their large family together. and they think it is right thing to keep faith and loyalty between families. It seems to have had a lot of influence on Korea. but, In the west, people care about pers...

What is surprising on Inglehart-Welzel cultural map? / which of those(some examples in class) are most surprising?

Image
Since I’m Korean, I naturally think about the position of the South Korea first. According to the map mentioned in the class, Korea has survival and secular values. But my opinion is different. I think Korea has the value of traditional and self-expression. First of all, I think Korea is now having self-actualization needs beyond the survival values. Of course there are exceptions as like always, but most people in Korea are not in danger of death from famine or poverty tomorrow unless they work today right away. Rather, many people use labor as a means of self-realization, not a means of survival. I think this is the reason why people get a job that one can do better and more interesting field. Not only labor but also fashion, hobbies, sports, and so on, Koreans are concerned to what they can better express themselves.    And secondly, Korean society tends to value traditional values. Korea has been developed based on Confucian ideas since long time ago. al...

[Blog Project Assignment 1] my analysis of WVS

Image
This is a statistics about whether each nation's people can accept sex before marriage. I tried to select as diverse countries as possible on Inglehart-Welzel cultural map to see the perception that depends on the characteristics of the countries. So I chose Jordan with survival and traditional values, the United States with self-expression and traditional values, Germany with secular-rational and self-expression values, Japan with secular-rational values, also middle values between survival values and self-expression values. And finally South Korea.  To briefly explain these values, traditional values emphasize religiosity and nation pride. So they are relatively conservative. The secular-rational values, as opposed to the earlier, is open to various issue. The survival values have low levels of tolerance because they prioritize safety and survival than other values. Finally the self-expression values pursue higher dimension like living well and self-expression desire tha...
