What is globalization? / JeongYoon Oh

 Summary

Globalization includes all sorts of events, such as global governance, global citizenship, human rights, migration, the creation of humanism, the creation of diaspora, and various kinds of transnational links. The term "globalization" is thought to have spread only after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent partial fall of communism in 1989. According to sociologists' books and articles on globalization, there are three main perspectives: economics, politics and culture. The book states that globalization is a relative disregard for sociological perspectives, but globalization has grown significantly thanks to social interaction and the spread of communication.

Social interaction using the Internet is also included. The importance of social interaction can be seen from communication decades ago. For example, 'Polish peasants in Europe and America' by Thomas and Znaniecki are typical case studies. The main viewpoints of globalization in this case are first, culture, second, society, third, politics. When referring to a social point of view, communication must be included unconditionally.

Many authors have studied globalization and found that the following patterns exist. First, it is the international system aspect. Second, the aspect that deals with the concept of humanity. Third, it is the whole of individual egos. The last is a nation-state.

Also, we should talk about the process of individualization. It does not appear only in the West, but it appears most clearly in the West. Personalization also means isolating individuals and making them responsible for their actions. Society is increasingly dependent on the input of individuals. If society depends on individuals in this way, there is a risk that individuals can easily change their identity by manipulating themselves. In some cases, the state manipulates personal identities, which is one of the most frequent events in the Western world. At the same time, this ability to manipulate one's identity can be greatly promoted by the anonymity of Internet communications, although it can be assumed in various ways, such as "race, country, class, religion, gender."

There are several characteristics of globalization. First, globalization consists mainly of two major directivity trends, which aim to enhance global connectivity and raise global consciousness. Consciousness is not a zone of empathy, but a shared sense of the whole world. Secondly, globalization has a particular form, one of which is that all intentions and objectives have been completed by the establishment of the UN agency. It means that globalization is aligned with four reference points: national, world politics, individual and human. Third, globalization consists of the four main aspects of human life: culture, society, politics and economy. These are intertwined, but in modern society, culture and economy are closely intertwined.

Globalization is not a thing, so it is important to recognize conceptual status. This is a necessary perspective for discussion and analysis of globalization. It is impossible to answer the question "What is globalization?" with certainty.

Interesting point

The most interesting part is what Ritzer called 'McDonaldization.' It refers to cultural uniformity of companies such as Nike, Starbucks, Gap, and KFC as well as McDonald's. However, McDonald's is an example of adapting the brand to local conditions. They say that the burger style has changed in India's culture of not eating beef. However, rather than respecting Indian culture for fear of cultural uniformity, I think it was a customized marketing for India. It is from a corporate profit perspective, not from a worried choice about McDonald's globalization.

Discussion

Q : If globalization goes on, does the world become unified? Or will various ways coexist together?

Comments

  1. I thought what you said interesting too- the McDonaldization. and I totally agree your opinion that Mcdonald's has different local recipes was for their benefit. but I think transnational corporations should be more responsible for culture and globalization.

and I'll get my thoughts on your question. I think no matter how much globalization progresses, it's unlikely that the world will become one. just as online books become more popular, more and more people look for paper books, If the world is about to be completely united, rather there will be a position that wants to protect various cultures. As the world is wide and there are differences in their respective positions so globalization will proceed in a way where various methods can coexist and consult.
