What is globalization? / Kim Yoon(김윤)
Summary
Robertson and White refer to 'globalization' in this article
from a comprehensive yet concrete perspective. There are various subconcepts in
globalization. For example, global governance, global culture, human rights,
migration and the creation of diasporas, transnational connections of serious
kinds and so on. Today, the definition of globalization does not only appear in
political discourse, but many writers also want to define it. But globalization
has not yet entered the academic world. Velho, who appeared in the article,
looked at globalization as a target, perspective, and horizon. Among them, for
example, the view of globalization as a target is that globalization is a
simple process. This view is not very possible, but 'in objective ways' it may
continue to look at a particular target. According to his argument,
globalization can be seen as the movement of the world as a whole.
The most prevalent concept for globalization is 'increasing connectivity'.
There are also cases where connectivity and consciousness are thought to be
connected together, and attention to connectivity is needed rather than
consciousness. Both concepts are actually studied in different fields.
Connectivity is studied by experts in political, economic and international
relations, and consciousness
is studied by anthropologists, sociologists and cultural historians.
Meanwhile,
many articles on globalization say that globalization has three dimensions. The
three dimensions are politics, economics and culture. Recently, cultural
aspects have been discussed along with economic aspects. One example is
'McDonaldization'. This is a social phenomenon defined by Ritzer, claiming that
people's practices shown by McDonaldization are connected to economic globalization.
Also, not only McDonald's but also various franchise restaurants should have homogeneity
in the society. The phenomenon of cultural and economic aspects emerging
together in globalization also has a paradoxical appearance, which shows the
complexity of thinking while also showing the poverty of thinking.
The question of the form of globalization was raised by a man named Emmanuel
Wallerstein. He thought he could define the world similarly, as we call a
single place. His ideas will only be possible in such things as the Soviet era
and Japanese imperialism during World War II. We are living in the age of the world
system. We also have numerous global discourse in such a system.
To sum up, globalization has two main characteristics. It is
the connection of the world and the increase in world consciousness.
Globalization also exists in the form of proper appearance in the right
circumstances. Among them, humans mainly understand globalization in terms of
society, economy, politics, and culture. We need an effort to analyze
globalization without recognizing it as something specific.
Interesting
It was interesting that there was
an attempt to define globalization that reflected the national class. I don't
think we can define globalization concisely in one sentence as it was in this
article, but I think we should consider almost all the national contexts of the
world equally in the course of discussing it.
It was also interesting that McDonaldization, which I had learned interestingly before, appeared as an example of globalization. At that time, I remember learning the negative aspects of McDonaldization, and this time I could learn how to look at McDonaldization in terms of globalization.
Discussion
Besides the definition of
globalization, is there an example of a concept defined with a differential reflection
of national and social context?
