What is globalization? / minji Moon

 Summary

What is globalization?

Globalization is hard to define in one sense. Therefore, there is much debate about the definition of globalization.

Velho (1997) says globalization is going on, but it is different for each country.

In fact, the concept of globalization has not appeared in studies for a long time.

The word globalization has been widely used since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

In the late 1900s, the view of globalization economically prevailed.

But in the late 1990s, the anti-globalization movement took place and people realized that globalization contributed to economic inequality.

The Internet has developed and the global movement has been promoted.

And developed countries pursued neo-liberalism and implemented policies accordingly.

Many people regarded this trend as an unpleasant aspect of globalization.

The biggest feature of globalization is connectivity, and connectivity is related to consciousness.

However, connectivity and consciousness are often studied by different fields.

What is important is to increase global connectivity and raise global consciousness.

Consciousness means a shared sense of the whole world.

Beck and Beck Gernsheim say globalization has affected self, and individuality.

For example, fashion, hairstyle, lifestyle, architecture, and so on.

Each individual expresses their identity by adding their own individuality to global trend.

On the other hand, globalization is not only up to sociology.

It is said that globalization usually has economic, political and cultural aspects.

And the cultural aspect is increasingly in the limelight.

Ritzer's claim to  McDonaldization spreads their own culture to other worlds.

But one more thing we can see here is that they're trying to unify their products, their services, their ways.

In order to globalize the brand, localization is also needed to suit the local situation.

In other words, social considerations are also necessary.

Therefore, we should consider the economic, political, cultural and social aspects of globalization.

So what dimension does globalization have?

Many scholars classify into four categories.

First, international system aspect, second,  the aspect that deals with the concept of humanity,  third, whole of individual egos, fourth, nation-state.

We must focus on all of these dimensions.

Globalization is difficult to define exactly what it is.

However, it should be careful to dismiss globalization only negatively and point it to any problems or phenomena.

Interesting point

The part about the flow of globalization was interesting.

The trend of early globalization, which focused on the economic side, and anti-globalization movement, which was blamed for economic inequality.

These series of processes are new and interesting to me.

I was positive about globalization. Therefore, I didn't know what people thought from a negative point of view about globalization.

Through this article, I understood why people who are negative about globalization came to have such an idea.

Another interesting thing is that globalization also affects individual self and identity.

It was a very sympathetic story when I confronted myself in real life.

Discussion

Are you negative about globalization?

I think globalization is an inevitable process and there are many positive aspects as well.

Think of pizza.

I knew that New York is famous for pizza. So when I went to New York, I had high expectations for New York pizza.

However, the taste of pizza in New York was no different from that of Korean pizza.

Through globalization, we can eat food from other countries without having to go to other countries.

In many aspects of foods, movies, music, sports, clothes, etc. we have various options that we choose.

I wonder what people who are negative about globalization think about these advantages.
