 What is globalization?

Recently, with the development of transportation and communication, many countries are having a lot of political, social, and economic influences. Scholars called this phenomenon ‘globalization’. Globalization is progressing in three main dimensions. It is a political, economic and cultural dimensions.

Politically, the political system of democracy that originated in Europe was considered the best of the modern political system and that was settled in most countries. In addition, the United Nations, which is a transnational organization that controls disputes between countries, or a coalition-type state agency that solves infectious diseases, climate, and environmental problems that are difficult for a single country to resolve, also appeared.

On the economic side, trade liberalization and capital movement between countries are taking place. The “WTO”, a transnational organization that conducts tariff-free trade through free trade agreements between countries, has also emerged. Thanks to this, the movement of capital between countries became active.

In terms of culture, westernization appeared a lot. Westernization appeared around the world in areas such as clothing, food, and housing. Now, with the advent of smartphones, people are sharing the country's unique culture.

Globalization in many ways does not have only advantages. There is also an opinion that rich countries exploit poor countries due to free trade. Indeed, protests against globalization appear in poor countries. In terms of culture, as various cultures competed rather than exchanged, the superiority and inferiority between cultures emerged, and mainstream and non-mainstream cultures became established.

Therefore, it is necessary to consider what direction globalization will proceed in this period when globalization is inevitable. In addition, we need to worry about our attitude toward living and accepting globalization.

  1. I agree that globalization is inevitable. In particular, I think that vast advances in information and technology accelerate globalization. Not only the state but also the individual should broaden their perspectives on globalization.
