Blog Assignment2. Hofstede Insights // Lee Myeong Ho
I wanted to know the differences and similarities between the three countries because they are close to the U.S. So i compared Canada, Mexico, United States through Hofstede's theory of cultural dimension.
For the first time, power distance shows that Mexico had large power distance. It means that their society is severely unequal. May be, orders and obedience will be more familiar to them. However, Canada and U.S represents an ordinary index.
Second is individualism. Canada and U.S value individual and privacy rights. They emphasize "I". However, Mexico values on belonging. They stress group's ideas more than individual's. The graph shows that Mexico is close to collectivism and Canada and U.S are close to individualism.
Thirdly, masculinity shows similar indicators in all three countries. Among them, the highest record is Mexico(69%). In Mexico, fathers decide on family size. And, only a small number of women are in high office. Canada is the most moderate. In U.S, masculinity is slightly stronger.
Fourth, in the uncertainty avoidance, Mexico has the highest record in the graph. It seems that change and difference may be a bit threat to them. But, Canada and U.S shows moderate records. Sometimes they either accept or reject change.
Fifth, Long Term Orientation. Long term orientation means that the future is more important than past. On the other hand, short term orientation stresses the past and the present more than the future. According to the graph, all three countries are more focused on the past and the present.
Sixth, indulgence. All three countries are showing more than half the value. Among them, Mexico has the highest indulgence. So Mexico believes itself to be in control of their own life and emotions.
