[Blog Project Assignment 2] Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory

I thought the number of Covid-19 infections might be related to the cultural dimensions of each country. So I analyzed the United States, where the number of Covid-19 infections continues to increase, Taiwan, which is considered to have been a successful prevention of Covid-19, and Korea.

The first is the power distance. It is simply 'the degree to which members accept inequality that exists in society'. According to the analysis, Korea and Taiwan are somewhat hierarchical societies and accept the inequality accordingly. The United States is a less stratified society with relatively low scores.

The second is individualism. Korea and Taiwan are regarded as collectivism societies due to low individualism scores. In particular, Taiwan scored the lowest, and this social tendency would have helped prevent Covid-19. But the U.S. scored incredibly high individualism scores. It is thought that the number of Covid-19 infections in the United States is increasing due to the tendency to prioritize individuals over society.

The third is masculinity. Korea and Taiwan scored low in masculinity, while the U.S. scored high with 62 points. This shows that values such as activeness, ambition, and achievement are more important in the United States.

The fourth is the uncertainty avoidance. Korea scored the highest score, indicating that Korea has a high tendency to rely on existing standards, formalities, or pursue stable jobs. Taiwan is also expected to be similar. The U.S. scored relatively low, indicating that new attempts, innovations, etc. would be more than the other two countries.

The fifth is long-term orientation. Korea and Taiwan ranked top. Therefore, we can see that these two countries are not complacent and are looking at the future in the long run. But the U.S. scored low. You can see the lifestyle of Americans who focus on the present rather than the long term. This is also likely to affect the spread of the Covid-19.

The last is indulgence. Korea had the lowest score. Therefore, it shows that Korean society does not emphasize personal desires or leisure time. The United States scored high. We can see that America is a society where it is emphasized to show desire and to realize what we want to do. Taiwan tends to be moderate.

Korea and Taiwan differ greatly from the United States in individualism, long-term orientation, and indulgence. These results indicate that cultural factors affect the spread of viruses.

Comments

  1. It seems interesting that the survey was conducted based on representative countries that dealt with Corona 19! It was also interesting that the U.S. has a different way of thinking about the future than Asian countries. By the way are there causes in terms of culture in which the index figures of Korea and the United States appear so?
