[Blog Project Assignment 2] Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory
[Is population related to social characteristics?]
My writing began with this question. When I used 'Hofstede Insights', I chose countries with a population similar to Korea. Among them, I intentionally chose countries on different continents, because countries on the same continent can form a similar society for reasons of distance. Therefore, the countries I choose are Korea, Spain, Argentina, and South Africa. Of course, because there are other factors such as GDP, area, etc., it's hard to explain the commonality of these countries by just one indicator of population. Therefore, it is only necessary to recognize that population is one of the factors that affects the characteristics of the country.
The most noticeable feature in the graph above is 'Power Distance'. All four countries scored intermediate points in the 'Power Distance' section. This score means that the hierarchy in the workplace is already fixed. In particular, Korea does not have any doubts about the hierarchy in the workplace. However, Argentina's score has a different meaning. There are immigrants in Argentina, and these are one factor that created the social class.
Uncertainty Avoidance
Except for South Africa, the rest of the three countries have an approximation in the 'Uncertainty Avoidance' section. The reason why the three countries can get the mid-80s is because the law is so organized. And the people have high reliability in the law. However, South Africans with 49 points has less reliability in the law than the three countries.
Masculinity/Indulgence
Two countries are grouped in this part. Argentina and South Africa are similar, and only Korea and Spain are similar. This is because the more economic power the nation has, the more people are interested in social issues. Recently, feminism in Korea issues continue to be shared.
Also, the people of Spain and Korea suppress themselves rather than enjoy the present. It is because it is difficult to enjoy the present only because society may change anytime. Among them, Korea has a strong competitive society, so the score for 'Indulgence' is significantly low.
So far, I have looked at the graph and found that each of the four countries has somewhat similar aspects than I expected. In fact, the size of the economy and the cultural sphere are having a greater impact than the population. Even so, it was an opportunity to compare the characteristics of countries that I had never thought of comparing to each other before.
