Cultural Globalization

 Relationship between Culture and Globalization

John Tomlinson says it is cultural globalization that globalization moves away from his physical space, communicates, interacts with people elsewhere, and expands culture. He doesn't say globalization is just cultural unification. He says globalization is a complex single-urbanization that occurs through human interaction. It is also said that globalization is a phenomenon of capitalism, but not limited to the economy, but a simultaneous and complex process of economy, politics, culture and technology. Tomlinson puts forward the concept of Deterritorialization. Deterritorialization  is the loss of natural relations between cultural, geographical and social territories and is the cultural condition of globalization. But this does not completely block cultural and territorial links. The expansion of social relations due to the increase in cultural experience also affects physical areas, meaning complex cultural spaces are formed.

John Thompson says globalization cannot be seen as a Western-centered unilateral cultural injection. This is because cultural complexity is aimed at a single city while at the same time diversifying. This means that culture can be used as a tool for governance, although globalization of culture aims for a united world beyond the nation and race.

It was a little uncomfortable reading John Tomlinson's. Because John Tomlinson is also a Westerner and he thinks he has no choice but to write it from a Western perspective. As an Asian, I can't help but think that I am still unified into Western culture in the globalization of culture. John Tomlinson said globalization cannot be seen as a unilateral Western-centered cultural injection, but he thinks it can be said from a Western perspective. However, this does not mean that globalization of culture is simply bad. As John Tomlinson said, it may be used as a tool for governance, but it may also have the opportunity to share diverse cultures beyond race and country.

If you think about the representative culture that Korea has introduced to other countries, there is K-POP. But to think about the basics, K-POP is not a unique Korean culture. This is because Western music genres were introduced to Korea. Then, can we say that Korea has contributed greatly to the globalization of culture on the spread of K-POP? I think that in the end this is a phenomenon in which the whole world follows a Western culture. Considering the situation in Korea, everyone listens to K-pop easily, but Korea's unique  traditional music, "Guk-ak" is hard to find. Therefore, I think that the spread of K-pop is not globalized Korean culture, but spread of Western culture as usual.
