[Reading Assignment 2] What is the relation between culture and globalization? / Ra Yushin
What is the relation between culture and globalization?
The
characteristics of culture have changed due to globalization. As for the
characteristics of the existing culture, if the culture was created based on
the region, the culture became deterritorial due to globalization. Before
globalization, culture formation was formed on a regional basis. Based on
natural environmental factors such as climate and geographic characteristics of
the region, humanistic factors such as political system and religion were added
to form a culture as a complex factor. After globalization, as the
interdependence of each region and country increases, culture is formed and
spread beyond regional boundaries. This leads to the loss of natural
relationships with culture. Due to globalization, the influence of the existing
natural and environmental factors on the formation of culture was reduced. In
the creation of culture, it is beyond the natural boundary of the region.
The second
characteristic of the culture changed by globalization is remoteization. When
searching for any knowledge, it is not constrained by time and space. Due to
the Internet, it is not necessary to find a space with information, and users
can acquire information when they want, rather than having to wait for a
specific time period. You don't have to go to another region to learn the
culture, but through Internet search, you can know the culture of another
region you want at the time you want. So, cultural exchange appeared in real
time. When a problem arises, it is possible to confirm the immediate response
of public opinion and the formation of culture through the cyber network, and
immediacy has established itself as a dimension of cultural power.
There is a
problem in that culture can be homogenized due to globalization. Due to the
aforementioned deterritorialization and remoteization, some expressed concern
that various cultures around the world could be encroached in mainstream culture.
However, the existing culture is not easily harmonized because it is made by
combining various natural and social factors such as politics, religion, race,
and natural environment of the region rather than in a short time. Cultural
homogenization does not happen as easily as we do not say that food culture is
dominated by western food culture just by eating at McDonald's and drinking
coffee at Starbucks.
Another problem
caused by globalization is the clash of universality and locality. The universality
and dignity of human beings established in modern times sometimes conflict with
local culture. For example, cannibal culture in some regions is a part of
conflict with human dignity. In such cases, sanctions should be imposed on the
local culture based on human dignity. In cases where human dignity is severely
damaged, local characteristics should be modified. However, all localities
should not be judged by strict standards of humanity. This requires careful and
flexible judgment.
What I realized
through the writing is that culture is based on the region. When considering
the relationship between culture and globalization, the relationship between
cultures colliding or fused with other cultures came to mind. Getting
acquainted with the digital culture and focusing only on it prevented the
expansion of thinking about culture. It was an opportunity to recall that the
existing culture or the digital culture that is now being formed is formed
around the region or country.
The topic I want
to discuss in this article is the factors that create culture in the future.
The existing factors of cultural creation were created by adding humanistic
factors such as political system and religion based on natural environmental
factors such as geographic and climate factors. However, in modern society,
regional boundaries have disappeared within the network due to globalization.
Cultural exchange takes place more actively than before through immediacy. If
so, I would like to discuss what new factors exist in the factors that play a
major role in the creation of culture in the future, excluding science and
technology.
