What is the relation between culture and globalization? /Jeong Ye-Chan

Globalization refers to a phenomenon or process in which interactions with people, objects, and knowledge in different regions take place simultaneously and rapidly on a global scale. As exchanges between regions are very active due to the development of transportation and communication, globalization is proceeding rapidly, and globalization of culture is accelerating as information and thoughts can be easily exchanged through media such as the Internet and social networking services (SNS). It also affects food, clothing, music, movies, and sports that people around the world enjoy today. In other words, it invades where I am located and other cultural territories. A cultural homogenization phenomenon occurs in which the cultural characteristics of one region are the same or similar in another. Examples include fast-food restaurants, coffee shops, cola and the spread of popular culture. However, there is a negative view of this phenomenon. There is a tendency to be uniformed into Western culture, and the cultural uniqueness of individual countries is weakened. There are also cultural and economic inequalities among countries. It means cultural imperialism. In response, Tomlinson argues that now that mass media has become universal, only cultural imperialism cannot understand globalization caused by contacts of different cultures. John Tomlinson refers to the concept of deterritorialization. Deterritorialization is the loss of natural relations between cultural, geographical and social domains, and is the cultural condition of globalization. This does not completely block the link between culture and territory. Tomlinson argues that rather than the view that cultural globalization and cultural imperialism will be settled, it should be interpreted as a problem arising from the expansion of cross-cultural contacts. This is because globalization aims to be a single city and at the same time to diversify. The globalization of culture is used as a tool for governance while at the same time aiming for a united world. John Tomlinson is not supportive of the idea that a simple integrated world culture will emerge, although Western culture will affect the formation of a single world culture as the concept of cultural imperialism has emerged.

What is the relationship between culture and globalization?

Our lives are closely related to other countries. The beans in our mixed rice may have been harvested in China. Cereal or bread is likely to be made of American flour. Much of our lives are related to other countries, such as the origin and brand of the clothes and shoes we are wearing, the hamburger stores we go to often, the pizza and chicken we enjoy, the music we enjoy listening to, and the gasoline that drives cars.
We can never dichotomously conclude that cultural globalization is good or bad. Therefore, I think it is our duty to live by feeling the reality of cultural globalization through our skin that we are trying to achieve globalization based on relativity and to become a true cosmopolitan.
