Poverty in Korea is affecting mostly the elderly, Why do you think this is the case?/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)
I looked up the latest statistics on the elderly poverty rate. According to the "2020 Statistics on the Elderly" released by the National Statistical Office, the relative poverty rate among people aged 66 and older was 43.4 percent. It can be seen that nearly half of the elderly are in relative poverty. This phenomenon proves that poverty in Korea is like poverty in the elderly.
In particular, the reason why the poverty rate of the elderly is high in Korea depends on the preparation for retirement. In fact, in Korean families, parents are raising their children with all financial responsibilities. The reality of Korea is that children are 20 years old and adults in Korea, but economic independence is not possible. They are struggling with high college tuition, money for job seekers before they get a job, and debt that they have to pay back even if they work. Even if you get married, you should pay dearly for basic medicine, ceremonies, and states in Korea. This is why there are kangaroos in the arms of their parents, and their parents have no choice but to help them financially. That's when you think about your retirement plans and keep working for a living. As such, the poverty rate of the elderly in Korea, coupled with the overall economic problems of Korean society, eventually became poverty for those who were parents after retirement. Although the government has various policies on such issues, such as providing jobs for senior citizens, the poverty rate of senior citizens does not easily fall. So I think the government should proceed with a fundamental solution to solve not only the poverty rate of the elderly but also the poverty of society as a whole.
