Reading 3: What is the relation between politics and globalization? - Jina Kim
Summary
In Reading 3, globalization refers to an organization of multidimensional, accelerated, interconnected spaces and time across borders. Regarding political globalization, it is about 'access to the social world that emphasizes not only time and space but also transnational processes'. Political globalization in this article highlights various aspects of globalization that seem dynamic rather than a new kind of reality. The most common form of political globalization is the worldwide spread of democracy. Even in non-democratic governments, democracy exists in the same form as the democratic movement. Many of the world's democratic ethnic states have spawned a different kind of political culture. The first view of political globalization is the geopolitics of world power, and the second refers to the revival of global normative culture. This spreads in global political communications. Coupled with the spread of globalization of democracy, political communication has become the foundation of a global normative culture that arose in support of it as much as opposition to geopolitics. In the past, if the state had become the subject of world norms, today the culture of world norms has come to exist beyond the national system. The global normative culture provides states with a normative reference point and a direction to political actors. Globalization has another view of globalization, where the presence of global players like the great powers must spread and implement world geopolitics, while it is less relevant to countries and cannot be reduced to a global normative culture. This occurs in a multidisciplinary network, a variety of sites that cannot be reduced to a single core and can be called a non-legal political form. This process of political globalization is associated with a new source of network and flow, mobility and communication, and represents a new relationship between individuals, countries and society. The idea of civil society, which has come to symbolize the political potential of globalization, has spawned the "civilization" of politics. This means the commonality of political forms that connect regional, global and transnational relations and mobilize various actors around common political codes such as competition, sustainability, personal rights and social justice. The world's civil society said it would address the contradictory trend centered on globalization, the first contradiction is that it lies between the emphasis and respect that globalization is different from the tendency to homogenize. The second is the contradiction within the individual forces of fragmented globalization. Globalization creates internal liquidity awareness by allowing each country cross-border networking and strengthening the opportunity to become a "world city."
Interesting point
Reading various articles on globalization, I found it interesting to see that globalization has various aspects. As with globalization, political globalization has many aspects and leads to a number of interpretations. It has been discussed not only in the context of autonomous loss and division of social globalization, but also in the context of the possibility of new liberation. Political globalization can be seen in the democratization of the world, the creation of a global civil society, and the movement beyond the scope of nationalism, especially the only actor in the political arena. I would like to note that the various questions at the center of the discussion on political globalization are related to the future of the nation's nation-state. The significance of the creation and existence of the United Nations was also seen between the discussions.
Discussion
There are many examples of political globalization. The most representative example is the existence of conflicts between developed countries and Brazil over the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change restricts greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide, which causes global warming for the Earth's ecosystem. This shows that global issues such as environmental pollution cannot be solved by just one country's own efforts, and to solve them, several countries must cooperate politically. Brazil's Amazon jungle is very important for life on Earth because it supplies 20 percent of the oxygen on Earth. But the Brazilian government is destroying the jungle, developing the Amazon River basin for its own development. While advanced countries oppose the development of the Brazilian government for the environment of the entire planet, the Brazilian government pointed out that the reckless development of advanced countries has destroyed today's environment. They also claim that developing countries can only live if they develop. All arguments from different positions are understandable. However, political cooperation from various countries is needed to mediate the conflict. The United Nations is a very important organization in political globalization. We think we need to look at this problem through various interpretations with various aspects.
