[ Blog assignment 2 ] Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory

I’m interested in the culture of Central and South America. Some people say “Korean is Latin American in Korea, and Latin American is Korean in Central and South America.” As such, there is a parallelism between the two cultures. I want to prove this similarity through Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory. I chose two key countries in Central and South America : Brazil and Mexico.

First, both Korea and Central and South America are authoritative societies. Mexico has the highest degree, next to Brazil. Because all countries’ scales are more than half-century, we can guess the hierarchy in their societies is seen as reflecting existential inequality.

Second, both Korea and Central and South America are collectivist societies. Korea has the lowest degree (18), and Brazil(38) and Mexico(30) is similar. They regard the group as important rather than individual. Korean and Latin American tend to follow group decision making.

Third, Central and South America has more masculinity than Korea, slightly. Especially, Mexico has the highest degree of masculinity(69). Maybe Mexican people have the gender stereotypes rather than other countries. Meanwhile, Korea is feminine society that regards consideration the weak and non-combative behavior as important.

Fourth, both Korea and Central and South America have high degree of uncertainty avoidance. Their uncertainty avoidance is more than 75, so they tend to reduce uncertainty and increase safety through various norms, regulations, regulation, etc. Plus, people in these society are emotional and anxious relatively.

Fifth, Korea is future-oriented, while Central and South America emphasizes reality. This is a biggest difference between two cultures. Korea is long-term oriented society that tend to achieve long-term outcomes. They value the ability to adapt, saving, and reward. On the other hand, short-term oriented society, Central and South America consider tradition, steadfastness, and public duty as important.

Finally, people in Central and South America is happier than Korea. Indulgence of Mexico and Brazil is more than 55, especially Mexico is 97. These indulgent society tolerate basic human desires. However, restrained society, Korea control human desires.
