Globalization some videos for discuss, "The Spirit Level," Richard Wilkinson/PARK HYE MIN(박혜민)
What are the main arguments of the video? What surprised you? Do you think the speaker is right?
The main argument in Richard Wilkinson's lecture is that inequality is not created simply by economic differences, but by various factors that create inequality, and that inequality affects society in some way. What surprised me about this video was that it first organized and visualized invisible conditions into data. And before watching the video, I was aware that a country with a large economic inequality is a country with a poor economy. However, it was surprising that the existing perception of rich or poor countries was broken through the income data and life expectancy data of each country.
Since then, I have come to sympathize with the result that the middle part of society is not dependent on national income, economic growth, and the magnitude of differences between us, including relative income, social status, and social status within society. Having a concept like this, it moves in two directions, broadening or narrowing the gap in inequality. I remember comparing Japan and Sweden in two directions. Japan pays less taxes and provides less welfare by adjusting income evenly, while Sweden pays more taxes and provides more welfare after taxes. Although the two countries had different choices, it occurred to me that the result might be the attitude that Korea should take now, given that the index of inequality was minimized.
Finally, I agree with the idea that it has created the feelings of people who create inequality through social mobility, violence, etc. with various factors, not income problems. What's wrong with this image that stands out in the present society? How to find a solution? It came to me that finding the root of the problem might be a problem that we should reconsider. Lastly, I agree with the speaker that the state should take responsibility for many of the factors that make up for inequality, and I hope that it will become a society that controls and narrows the inequality in Korean society one by one.
