R2) What is the relation between culture and globalization? / Yerim Han

1) Summary

Globalization is an interdependent network that characterizes the material, social, economic, and cultural life of modern society. Understanding this allows us to think of a number of complex processes in between. The author says this understanding is very close to the capitalist system because we distort understanding at a cultural level without making simple imperialist judgments. It is assumed that globalization will lead to a single world culture because it can have the same effect on connecting other things, such as the economy. However, what we see from a more detailed perspective in historical and cultural contexts that we can understand is not easily distinguished.

Progressive opinions on global culture try to reconcile cultural differences and added values with society, not for global domination. Despite the tendency of cultures and countries to claim "universality" as their own, they regard universality as a composition and want to make it work in an international order. We must present far more agile and flexible cultural concepts than ever before, and face a future world we call a different ethnically biased nation.

2) Interesting Point/Learning Point

I was the one who saw world culture as a threat to my cultural identity. After reading this article, I realized that I confused the Western imagination of globalization with the universality of human experience.

3) Discussion

What is the relation between culture and globalization? I think that culture and globalization have a very strong relationship to this question. Culture is their lifestyle, behavior, and lifestyle that is formed and shared within a group (such as a nation and society). Through globalization, these cultures are understood and exchanged among different groups. Today, it is easy to see that exchanges have become more active through the development of the Internet and cultural boundaries have disappeared. What are some examples of active cultural exchanges around us?
